“Mommy,” Gretta asked, “how did the trees get those scars?” her eyes darkened with worry. “Are they like people who get hurt?”
“They’re all right,” I said, “That’s how they grow.” She’d been pointing at the birches.
“Oh,” she said, “OK. If that’s how they grow.” She ran off, satisfied, her doll tucked under her arm.
Just like people, I thought, hoping she wouldn’t have to learn too soon.
